It’s handy to learn how to create the light maps in Hammer, because there are a lot of really nice maps out there you can use that don’t have HDR light maps.
There are a very liimited amount of nice sandbox maps for SFM, and most are too basic and lack any real detail for me personally, and that’s why I started playing around with Hammer.
The beauty in Hammer is any static prop that gets in the way can be deleted from the map, and you can add new props to the map template that automatically spawn in position when you open the map in SFM.
But it’s really handy for daylight maps because hammer will generate a shadow under props you insert like parked vehicles when you compile the map.

I wonder if Steam has been messing around in the background with SFM recently?
The other night I was map making on Hammer, when it suddenly started malfuctioning badly.
So I closed it and opened SFM instead and loaded a bsp map I was working on earlier that had a HDR light map.
But to my horror the light map information was gone from the maps, and Hammer is still unusable.
I don’t know how but somehow the previously working maps that had been compiled with HDR light maps had lost them.
But assuming it’s just Hammer on my computer that’s ♥♥♥♥ itself, you can decompile the bsp maps to vmf files with BSPSource and run them through Hammer to create the same map with a HDR light map.
You just click and drag the bsp map file you want a lightmap for into the BSPSource window, and click the decompile button.
That will convert the bsp map intormation into a vmf format that Hammer can read and edit.
Next open your newly created vmf file with Hammer (Located in your SFM Game «bin» folder.)
Once your map is loaded, SAVE THE MAP UNDER A NEW NAME and then click «File» and select «Run Map» option from the drop-down menu.
The next window that appears will include a little HDR box, which you need to tick to generate the HDR light map, and then just start the recompiling.
Now if the map didn’t have any leaks, Hammer should compile it without a problem and create a new bsp map with HDR lighting enabled. (Saves map in usermod map folder)
It sounds complicated but it’s really quite simple to do.
However, a lot of maps get errors in them because decompiling isn’t a perfect process and data corruption is common.
From personal experience, I’ve found a lot of maps need major repair work to compile and often it’s just too much hard work.

Just got sfm today. When I tryed to load a map, an error message came up saying
«HDR Disabled
This map is missing high dynamic range (HDR) lightmaps.
The SFM requires HDR lightmaps to render properly.
You can create HDR lightmaps for your map with hammer or vrad.
See the Source Developer Wiki for more info.»
I don’t understand what these stuff mean and how to fix it. Any advice would be great thanks.
What map are you trying to load? Have you already imported custom content? All the included maps should have HDR enabled for you. If you downloaded a map from somewhere else, you’ll have to do some tinkering to get HDR enabled:

Are you compiling the map with the «simple» or the «advanced» interface? (I’ve found HDR not to work when compiling in the «advanced» interface, though that may just have been me derping around.)
And are there any lights in the map?

Yes there are light and spot lights, I compile the map then go into SFM and then the message comes up saying HDR Disabled no reason for it just says that
If there are lights in the map and you’re enabling HDR when compiling it in the simple interface. then I don’t have any other ideas about what could be wrong, I’m afraid.
Make sure there’s no leaks in map.
If in case there’s one, you might try removing model or entity that’s causing that.
Or seal the void with skybox.
any errors in the console? does the map compile correct? i mean everything. you can complete just vbsp and you have a working map without lighting. so.
Just tested with a whole new project and the same thing happend HDR Disable even though its not, it to do with crappy Valve
