No game data on top level (minor issue) #618

The problem
If I install a mod, and I click to manual button, I got unnecessary messages (No game data on top level) if the top directory in mod (archive) is «Data» or «data». But this is perfect directory mod structure. Automatic install works without any unnecessary messages.
This is only minor issue.

Clicking manual means you want MO2 to not perform any automatic actions regarding the archive. You get the raw archive however the mod author decided to package it. Putting files in data/data is not a valid installation therefore MO2 warns you about it.
Are there any considerations I’m missing here? This sounds like expected behavior.

I know, but the mod top directory data/Data is perfect in the Fallout New Vegas, because this is the REAL top level of any mod in this game. For example, in the Morrowind, this is the Data Files directory.
These perfect directories. this is my probem, these VALID directories.

Is there a reason you’re clicking manual in the first place?

When you «manually» install a mod archive in MO2, the contents of the archive are assumed to be placed within the existing «Data» directory (when the virtual file system kicks in).
The archive you listed would create a nested «Data» directory inside the existing «Data» directory, which is incorrect behavior. That is what the message is warning you about.

Thanks for the answers!
Unfortunately, as I can see, this conversation is totally pointless. Because the first question is, what was first, the mods, or this modmanager? The MO2 decided what is the truth, and say it: many(. ) mod packaged incorrectly?
For example, in FalloutNV, all mod stored in the Data directory. So, an example mod archive looks like it:
and the mod install instruction this:
«unpack archive to the game (root) directory», then the result is perfect!
So, if the structure is perfect, very bad answer from MO: «No game data on top level». LOL. Luckily, automatic mode works.
But as I said, this conversation as I said is totally pointless, so this is the end of this conversation, I’m sorry. But one more thing, few people asking me here:
«Why are you installing manually?»
The answer, first, I looked the tutorial, and I like it the step by step possibility (I’m an advanced user/programmer). Second, I want to see step by step, what happens under mod install, what files copied, I want to see the directory structure before mod install.
I suggest, and this doesn’t change your interesting «I’m the truth» logic, put a new checkbox to the options:
Automatic data directory top level «correction» (lol) under manual install. 🙂

Hi,
I’m modding SkyrimSE with MO2 by following this version of the step guide: https://stepmodifications.org/wiki/SkyrimSE:1.0.0#04-Foundation. I’ve followed everything until now but experience problems with the first mod I need to install without using Nexus. It’s Skyrim SE particle patch for ENB and I downloaded ‘SPECIAL EDITION > ALL-IN-ONE INSTALLATION > LATEST VERSION (GOOGLE DRIVE)’. It’s installation went fine (Situation A) but when I have to enable the optional ESP ‘Particle Patch for ENB SSE.esp’ I get the message ‘Plugin not found: Particle Patch for ENB SSE.esp’ in my log (Situation B).
I’ve tried: reinstalling the mod, refreshing, enabling and disabling the mod, restarting MO2, re-downloading the file. It doesn’t fix my problem. I’ve added the pictures of situation A and B. I hope there are people who can help me here. Thanks so much in advance!
Situation A
I’ve stumbled upon a weird issue that I haven’t encountered or read about before. I’m running Windows 8.1 and a fresh install of Fallout New Vegas with no mods so far. I’m trying to get Mod Organizer and the 4GB exe to work together, but despite following all of the advice, tips and workarounds it’s still not happening. Right now I can launch the 4GB exe through Mod Organizer. The game starts, I can load a save and ‘play’. The problem is that all of the text has disappeared or is invisible. I can only navigate the main menu by memory, the ingame popups regarding the DLC is missing the text as well.
This issue does not happen if I start the game on its own with the normal exe.

It only happens if I start the either the normal or the 4GB exe through Mod Organizer.
I’ve arrived at a point where I really don’t know what it could be or what I could try next. One thing I do know, however, is that I can’t go back to the pre-MO modding, so I’m turning to you helpful people and hope that someone here has an idea.

No game data on top level with MO
i am getting this same error and i try to set as directory on the file and it just takes me to the next file in the tree and i try to set each on as directory and still cant clear the error.. i am trying to install mainly re-texture mods such as the «Realistic» set.. any help would be great..
Seriously? Where is Tony971’s MO page when you need it? This is basic, 101 here, people. You’re getting that error because the mod wasn’t packaged correctly. It’s easy to fix, either manually, or through MO. The Data folder must be set as the directory in MO, nothing else.
Create a folder called Data. Insert the mod’s files. There should be folders like Textures, Meshes, and an ESP. Those go in the Data folder. Then you put that folder into another folder called NameOfMod, v x.x.x. Zip it, and point your mod manager’s installer at it.
Why that extra folder is hanging outside of the Data folder in that mod in the post above, I have no idea. Doesn’t look right.
I believe WryeBash is capable of fixing these errors, too, but I’m not familiar enough with it.
I have the same problem but its for FNIS please help

I’d highly recommend watching Gopher’s tutorial here
I had the same problem with the same error. Though a mod for Fallout 4.
I got my mod working by allowing MO to download the file, then double-clicking on the file
in the «Downloads» tab in the right pane.
Then a small window will open asking you if you want to do a «Quick Install», «Manual» or
Select «Manual» install and it comes up with the dreaded, » No game data on top level «.
You then need to click on the checked data folder, then right click and tell it to «Set data directory».
It should then give you the, » Looks good «.
I hope the above helps.

No game data on top level with MO
Ill probobly feel like an idot but can someone please help me figure this out. I am getting that » No game data on top level » message» i know were the file is supposed to be but I want it to be managed by MO. The person who helps me will get a cookie. JK, i’m in college, can’t afford cookies. Thanks
Here is the MO wiki’s section on Installing, Updating and Uninstalling. Pay attention to the manual install section as it explains what is going on and what to do.
Thankyou so much, and here is youre cookie.
Thanks but no thanks. I’m not a fan of nuts in my cookies.
I’ll have it. om nom nom.
Having the same problem, but the directions at the S.T.E.P. project didn’t help, doesn’t tell me what folders need to be set or in what order. Any help will be appreciated.
I’ve never used Requim or the Skyproc patcher. There plenty of people who have tho. You might want to try asking in the official MO forum over at STEP. http://forum.step-pr. anizer-support/
Hi! I’ve recently downloaded Body options for CBBE with Modorganizer, but when i try to install it, I also get the message «No game data on top level». I’ve tried to right click the data folder and set it as data directory but when i do that it just opens a new folder and still says «No game data on top level». No matter how many times i try I never get the «looks good» message. Anyone knows why this isn’t working? It worked fine with all the other mods.

Certain mods (including Body Options) will never show a «Looks good» message, because they don’t contain folders that MO recognizes as containing mod data. Just set the proper data folder and hit OK.
